Aquatics Pre-Requisites Lifeguarding Training

Tentative Time Schedule

Train to become a certified American Red Cross lifeguard and learn valuable skills including injury prevention, facility safety, patron surveillance, emergency preparation, rescue skills, victim assessment, first aid, CPR/AED and care for head, neck and spinal injuries.

Participants 17 and under MUST be accompanied by an adult during the prerequisite activities. Participants must be present for pre-requisite testing and all four class days.

Fee: $175.00 / participant 
Must pre-register for a session.

(Minimum age 15 years old for certification course; must be 16 years or older to be employed with the City of McAllen) (If under 18 a parent or guardian must be present for the prerequisites in case of an emergency.)

Pre-Requisites

  • Swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl or breaststroke
  • Retrieval of a 10lb object from a depth of 7ft.,
  • Tread in deep water with no hands for 2 minutes
  • Surface dive and swim 20 yards with weight, using legs only, and exit the pool without using ladder within 100 seconds

*In the event a participant fails to complete the prerequisite test, he/she will not be permitted to continue certification and may request a refund minus a non-refundable fee of $50.00, or transfer to another Lifeguard certification class if available. 

Pre Requisites take place on first day of class
